Welcome – Day’s agenda and overview of SMSF advice to 2015 – Expect five years of major change to SMSFs thanks to Cooper, Henry and the government’s overhaul of financial advice. Grant will highlight the five key recommendations that will change all aspects of the SMSF advice industry forever and consider the SMSF way forward for accountants, administrators, financial planners, auditors, lawyers and SMSF specialist advisers.

Three cases on the new SMSF borrowing rules – 25,000 SMSFs have used the SMSF borrowing strategy. But the borrowing rules have now been upended with changes to the SIS Act 1993, Income Tax Assessment Act 1997 and Corporations Act 2001. Grant will review the changes, detail three case studies covering what can and cannot be done under the laws, why to get in now before it is too late and which are the best banks to use.

SMSF investment strategies – Five tips and traps – Accountants, financial planners and auditors must understand the intricacies of a modern 2011 SMSF investment strategy. In this session, Grant will consider the SIS Act 1993, tax commissioners and the Cooper panel’s investment strategy requirements, the benefits of a strong investment strategy, how to document correctly and the sizable costs of getting it wrong.

SMSF estate planning - Five tips and traps – A comprehensive estate plan must be completed for any member with more than $300,000 in superannuation benefits or insurance. Three recent costly cases show the perils of financial planners and accountants who have relied on BDBNs. Grant will cover how to build an effective SMSF estate plan, what not to do with BDBNs, pensions and estate planning, as well as the five practical steps to put in place immediately upon the death of a member.
